Meet Christophe Murdock

We recently connected with Christophe Murdock and have shared our conversation below.

Christophe, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.

It all comes from my family. I was raised to believe that people were good deep down. My Grandfather was a Baptist Minister and preached for years on the local radio station. I learned a lot from him. My Grandmother was also busy in the church and taught Sunday School. My mother was a Social Worker and was always helping people when she could. She taught Sunday School to the Special Needs Adults for a while. My father was the hardest worker I ever met. All of this shaped me into what I am.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Currently I’ve been focused on running a small all ages club in Norman, Oklahoma called NCom Cyberhall. I run a weekly film club, gaming nights, art shows and frequent concerts with both local and touring bands. I’ve partnered with my friend Mark who runs Norman Computers. By day the business space is his, and by night I take over. It’s akin to “Peach Pit After Dark” if you’re old enough to have watched 90210. We keep things all ages and don’t serve anthing. The computer store pays the main bills so I can afford to give the bands the bigger cut of the door and what little I do take goes for paying the kids who work the shows, flyers and more events. I still work a little on my music and art, but the club takes up most of my free time. So it’s been on the back burner for now.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Just always working to make shows happen. I’ve worked at a lot of clubs and picked up how they ran. I got to see it from both sides… as a performer and from the people who kept the business going.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

I’m lucky in a sense. I don’t have to keep events going to stay afloat and survive. When I get too overwhelmed or I have too much going on I’m able to just step back and take a break. I have a lot going on this coming month trying to get some things done in my personal life, so I was able to just step back from booking shows for the month and will resume in October.

I guess my advice would be to not be afraid to take a step back when you need to. You have to take care of yourself or whatever project you’re working on could suffer if you don’t. Some people work themselves to an early grave trying to achieve something and I understand you need to keep a momentum going forward, but if you break down it could all end.
