Vokills Interview: Christophe Murdock

Vokills Interview - Christophe Murdock

Vokills Interview - Christophe Murdock

1. Please introduce yourself and tell us who you sing for.

My name is Christophe Murdock and I sing lead vocals for myself. My solo work focuses more on the roots/country side of things and with my current back-up band we have been focusing more on the punk side of things. I also currently sing backup in Fancy Bump and Anarchy For Assholes.

2. What/Who made you want to sing?

When I was a kid all I wanted to do was grow up to sing in a punk rock band. My cousin Merle, an accomplished songwriter, worked in Nashville and was a huge influence on me as well. As I got into my teen years I didn't want to be the focus anymore and started playing bass, and eventually guitar. As I got older and was writing more songs I found that no one really did my style or was the right fit to sing my words, so I just started doing it myself.

3. Who was the first singer you saw live that gave you chills?

That's something I really wish I could remember. I've been going to shows since I was seven years old. Hank Jr. was my first gig and that definitely left an impression on me. A lot of underground bands in my teen years that I can't even remember all of. The first time I saw Suicidal Tendencies that was a big moment for me. Mike Muir's words were just powerful.

4. Many people say heavy music is just screaming, How would you combat that statement?

Those people just don't know how to get past the shock or distaste of something that's not for them. Heavy music goes beyond "just screaming". I would probably show them some early Judas Preist. Rob Halford is known for his screaming, but there is some heavy blues and roots making it's way to the top in that stuff. For the uninitiated, I would just try to show them by example.

5. If you growl or do harsh vocals how do you keep your voice after such violent performances?

I don't tend to have too much of a problem when pulling out my growl or harsher vocal styles and going back to my singing when I have a good sound guy. It's when I can't hear myself and end up having to yell everything instead of sing or growl it that I lose my voice. I think there is a difference, for me, than when I am putting out a stronger style of vocals and actually having to yell.

6. Do you have a warm-up routine?

I don't have a warm-up. Basically I just make sure I'm up earlier instead of sleeping in the afternoon before the gig. When I sleep it sometimes takes me a couple hours to get my voice going.

7. Do you think power or performance is more important?

For me it's performance. I don't have as much control when I focus on pure power. I can belt out when I have too. I've played clubs where the P.A. was shit and I had to yell everything to be heard, but I prefer having focus and control.

8. Who do you think gets unfair vocal praise, someone the world thinks is great but is not? And who is great but does not get the credit?

To be honest I really don't pay attention to what others think is/isn't great. Pretty much everything my friends try to force me to listen to that they prattle on about I think is shit. I don't even bother learning who it was.

9. Name your top 5 vocalists.

In no particular order these were five that influenced me greatly. Melora Creager,
Stiv Bators,
Johnny Cash,
Nick Cave,
Eva O.

10. Michael Buble or Jim Gillette? Just testing your skills here.

 This is a thing?

11. Who do you love to listen to that would surprise people?

Oh shit... I listen to Taylor Swift's super poppy stuff. haha. It's become a big joke now.

12. If you could remove the autotune from any singer who would it be?

Anyone who isn't using it for an obvious effect I guess. I hate when they use that shit to mask over.

OFF THE DEEP END SERIES : Christophe Murdock

1.Why Bass?

I always loved that deep end. It's what spoke to me first. I originally had no plans to sing or play guitar, all I wanted to do was make evil tones on that bass.

2.Do you think it is unfair or just lack of knowledge bass gets so little credit?

Lack of knowledge. Bass can be so many different things, just as any other instrument.

3.What kind of bass do you use? Model , color , year , And why

I have two. I have an old black Fender Precision with a white pick guard that is my main weapon. It's great. A real workhorse that can take a beating. The other was my first, a black on black Gibson Epiphone. My father bought that for me as a gift when I was 15. It meant a lot to me and I only use this at home or in studio. My father passed when I was 18 and I don't want to damage it. Too much sentimental value.

4.Tell us about your amplification

I used to use a Peavey Mark IV and loved it. Had two channels with a selector combiner switch.  So I could back and forth from deep to punchy or combine for the best of both worlds. An ex-roomate that was methed out stole the head so now I use my backup, a smaller Randall Jaguar with two 12's. Still a good solid amp with a nice sound, just not my dream amp. Eventually I'll run across another head for my Peavey though.

5. With all of that being said do you feel tone is an important thing for bass?

Tone is very important. You can change the entire feeling of a song based on that tone.

6.Do you prefer 5 strings over 4 string?

I play a 4 string. Never had a 5 string. For the style I play I have yet to need one.

7.Who is your favorite bassist?

Eerie Von from Samhain and Danzig was the one that got me wanting to play bass first. Still is and will always be my favourite.

8. Who is your least favorite bassist?

 I don't really have a least favourite.

9.Why do you think women seem to be attracted to playing bass?

I couldn't answer that. I see women on all instruments all the time. I never thought of bass as one they gravitated towards.

10. What bassist dead or alive would you like a private lesson with?

Peter Steele would be cool. I always liked his tone and would like to see his set-up. I've always been impressed with those that front the band while playing bass as well. I've had to play the bass in a couple of the bands I front for a gig or two and it changes how I sing and everything.

11. Bonus question
Bobby Doll , Nikki Sixx , Les Claypool , Billy Sheehan  which is more ridiculous and why

Well, I don't feel any of them are ridiculous in a negative way. They have owned that in a way many can't, but I guess I'd go with Claypool because he owns that ridiculousness on a level like no other that makes him definitely the most interesting in my book.

The OKC Edge Horror Collective: Interview With Eric Xton

Horror Exclusive: Part II - Featuring Eric Xton(Son of The Saw).                 Oct 14 2019

Written by Will Harrison

This is a kind of part two of the previous interview with Christophe, Since Eric Xton is one of the directors as well as an actor in the film “Son of the Saw”! So enjoy!

Will: How did you prepare for the role and direct at the same time?

Eric: Well I was never meant to be in the film itself, i’ve never thought of myself as an actor and I had cast a local professional to be in the role of “John" the "father" figure of the household, an older gentleman that would have really taken the role to new levels, I believe that He ended up canceling just before filming started and since I wrote the script and knew the lines already I was the only real option to fill those shoes on such a short notice, I would have liked the character to have had an older feel and look to him but it worked out in the end lol, as for directing at the same time, being on set and directing usually isn’t to complicated I wouldn’t say, especially if your lucky enough to work with good people around you. your other actors and you can run through a few times per scene and make sure everyone knows lines and how to act, position, move etc then give it a shot and if it doesn’t go well you do it 47 more time, lol!

Will: How long did it take for you get ready to film?

Eric: Well not too long, Christophe Murdock (the villain) posted an image on Facebook of his halloween costume of him as leather face, a very impressive costume I might add. I made a joke about "we should make a fan film", he said "okay" , I said okay? lol, and a couple of months later we were in the woods with 60 people cast and crew huddled around a camp fire trying not to freeze to death while people did there scenes lol, basically i wrote the script out in a few days, a production crew got slammed together with some of the local college students, I was able to secure a house/location, thanks to David Timmons, everyone’s schedules got figured out and BAM! We all almost froze lol

Will: How did you find people to be involved in the film?

Eric: Now thats an odd story, this whole started more as a side joke comment, well from there the crew was found due to a mutual connection through another guy who I did some work for at a convention ... that guy I asked if he wanted to come on as a camera man basically and he said sure i’ll call you back .... a couple of days later when he finally did he informed me we would have 2 camera crews, 3 audio crews, full support for lights and grips, gaffers, and all sorts of other fancy technical terms for filming stuff, lol and I said, oh crap okay then I guess we are going to make something legit here, lets see what happens

The cast, a lot of them I knew from other things i’ve done or helped on, but one guy named Darren Gray, this guy just started talking to me one day about being in a roll, and i told him sure why not. See I thought he was a good friend of Christophe’s and I was taking a leap of faith trusting that this Darren guy would be okay thinking that he was in this because of Christophe, and honestly I for the life of me can’t remember how I got that idea in my head to begin with lol so this "random" guy shows up on film day and no one has any clue who he is, so people start asking me "hey who’s that dude over there?", and i’m like "yea that Darren, Christophe’s friend ....right? ..." and ended up being no one knew him and he was a complete wild card of an actor and he did a great job, and he is a great guy too so i’m REALLY glad we took that chance PLUS he ended up bringing in some props that were used on the actual Texas Chainsaw Massacre films from the past!

Will: Give us a spoiler for your new film if you can?

Erik: Oh yeah I love to ruin movies for people before they see it lol, "son of the saw" had its moments, it had a lot of ups and downs as do all films, after I learned so much from that experience i REALLY wanted to push some envelops, so I decided to create something a little different but keep it horror (i cant help it). The film is called IIIIII and its going to be dark, I do love my horror comedies BUT i’m not ready to make those yet i would like to terrify people a little first, so its going to be based around halloween time (how cliche' I know right lol) and it will have to do with some family struggles, fighting personal demons ...and maybe some more physical ones even lets say LOL .... but filming will start this October and I will begin editing it down over the following months,i’m teasing a few updates here and there, over the filming and editing time
so please drop in and check out the page

Written by Will Harrison

Here is a short interview with Christophe Murdock, Actor, He plays the monster/killer in the film.

Will: How did you prepare for the role?

Chris: To prepare I really just created a backstory for the character and gave it something so it was more than just a guy with a chainsaw grunting.

Will: Any other crazy stuff that you did on set?

Chris: I didn't find "the" chainsaw until fairly last minute, but practiced swinging around a small model to get used to it. Had a few days practice with the large model. Enough to get used to the weight and length.

Will: What was your creative process in between sets?

Chris: I picked out the outfit for the character and my mother Carolyn Murdock made alterations to it so it was like I wanted and gave me room to move my arms around and swing that chainsaw. Eric Xton then weathered the hell out of it and dirtied it up. Eric made the mask.

Will: How long was the process for getting ready with the makeup and all?

Chris: That never took long to put on. Just slip it on and strap it down. Jennifer Flores did the makeup. Not a lot since my face is covered. Mostly working on the eyes and mouth. Making my teeth look nastier. The only part that took a while was covering my tattoos.

Will:  How'd you get picked for the part?

Chris:  Eric Xton and I created it together. I was Leatherface for Halloween and posted videos and photos of my costume. With my size it came off really well. Eric had made the comment that we should make a Leatherface film. I hit him up and said we seriously should. We bounced some ideas back and forth and I wrote the song "Pray to the Saw" that was meant to be the theme of the film from the beginning. He in turn did a script treatment and that's how Son of the Saw was born.

Will: Did you play an other parts on this film maybe just as a voice?

Chris: As for other parts, I focused on my character and wore a few hats behind the scenes but nothing else on screen.

Will: You heard it here first Guys and girls, now be sure to go watch Son of The Saw on Youtube, and
go #support your local Christophe, follow him on Facebook and all other social media!

The Axemen Interview Series: Christophe Murdock

1.Tell us your name and the band you play for
Christophe Murdock. I play solo, with my own band and currently also am playing guitar in Anarchy For Assholes.
2.Who made you want to pick up the guitar
I always deeply felt music and wanted to be a singer, then in my teen years picked up the bass. When I finally grabbed a guitar I was listening to a lot of guitar work with Ron Emory (T.S.O.L.) and Eva O (Christian Death)

3.Are you self taught or did you take lessons?
I am self taught. I had some piano and violin lessons as a child, a few starter bass lessons in my early teens. Then everything from that point I figured out on my own or from jamming with others.
.
4. Can you read music, Can you read tab?
I read music when I was a child, but lost it over time. Never bothered to read professional tab, but do well enough when bands I've filled in for tabbed out their tunes.
.
5.Do you feel like you have your own sound / tone ?
Yeah, I have a wide range of influences including a lot of post-punk, goth, and old school country so I have tweeked with my sound a bit to where I feel it's a little different than some of the others out playing now.
6.Tell us about your guitar ( brand ,model . year , color )
On my electric rig I'm currently I'm using Ibanez Artcore Semi-Hollows. I've have three different ones. All fairly new. I used to play a lot of the RG models, but the tone was a little heavier than I like. (Not to mention they look so small when I hold them) I like the earthier sound I get out of the Artcore's and they are a lot more comfortable for me to hold. For acoustic, a friend lost my Ibanez to a pawn shop... so I'm currently using a Fender Sonata. I've made a few changes to it including brass pins and a bone nut and bridge. I like it's sound. I don't even remember what my current 12-String model is...

7.What about pickups? Passive or active ? Tell us about them
My pickups are the stock passive Classic Elites.

8.Lets get into amplification, Same drill brand , model , speakers etc
I use an old Peavey Stereo Chorus 212. I never made any changes to it either. It comes stocked with 2 12" Scorpion Speakers.
9.Do you have a pedal board? Tell us about that badboy
I used to use a lot of effects when I was younger but started straying away to more a more roots sound and mostly acoustic over the years and just using my built in effects with my electric. I recently dug out all of my old pedals and started using them more as I play for other bands. I have the built in Distortion, Reverb and Chorus for my Peavey with a special foot switch made for me by Cat In Cog Studios. For my direct input from guitar to amp I have my Snark Tuner, DOD Stereo Phaser and DOD Death Metal Distortion. Through my Effects Loop I have a Volume pedal, DOD Ice Box Stereo Chorus, DOD Digital Delay and an Electro-Harmonix Attenuator.
10..Now tell us your Dream Rig in detail…..
Just more pedals. I like messing around with them in the bands I play in. Getting different sounds and tones. I can't stand multi-effect pedals though. So I just want dozens of pedals and a huge pedal board.
11.What guitarist can you not stand?
  None really come to mind.
12. Is tone more important or is technique?
For me it's tone. I'm not very technical and I tend to get a little sloppy with the guitar playing and work it into the sound at times, but can't stand when my sound is not right.

13. Name your top 5 guitarist
 1. Eva O.
2. Ron Emory
3. Jerry Reed.
4. Todd Youth.
5. Roy Nichols
14.Who is the most overrated guitarist
There are a lot of em, but they are better than me so I won't name names. lol
15.Who would you like a one hour private sit down lessons with anyone dead or alive?
Anyone on my top 5 list or Robert Johnson.

Christophe Interview For The Grinder: Metal Coffee PR

1.What is the name of your band and how did you come up with it?
What is your name and what do you do for the band?

My name is Christophe Murdock. I am a singer/songwriter. I mostly perform solo, but also occasionally as a duo or band. Usually under my own name or when a band name it's “Christophe and the” so people still know it's me. (Example, for the First Jason concert I had a punk band back me up and we were ”Christophe and the Kids From Crystal Lake”)

2.Tell us where you are based and describe the scene. How do you think where you are located influences your sound.

I am based out of Oklahoma. I'm not sure how to describe the scene... I am kind of all over. At the metal shows, punk shows, country shows... just any live music. I don't feel my location infuences my sound.

3.Who influences your sound that would surprise people?

I pull my influences from all over. Anything and everything I hear can become an influence. Metal, Punk, Pop, Country, Jazz, the list goes on. I guess one of my biggest influences was my cousin Merle Kilgore, a songwriter and ex-performer that was still in the business. While growing up he really encouraged me in all that I did. I was mostly playing bass in punk and metal bands at the time and he would talk to me and build me up. Growing up his sound also became an influence on my style.

4.Are you endorsed by musical companies , if so who , and if not who would you like to be endorsed by?

I am endorsed with Coffin Case and Dean Markley Strings. I would like to also be endorsed by Ibanez, Peavey, Fright-Rags and Jim Beam.

5.When you started what was your ultimate goal? And how close to the goal are you now?

My ultimate goal was never to be a “Rock Star”, I just wanted to make a living and travel. I am not quite where I want to be, but definitely am on my way. I am at the point where music is my main focus, while working at clubs on the side. I hope to increase the amount of touring I do in the coming year.

6.In today's digital environment it takes creative strategy to keep things moving. What creative ideas do you have to keep your band relevant over time?

To be honest I am kind of a dinosaur when it comes to this. I am the guy that collects vinyl and VHS. So, I tend to focus on my phyical product more so than my digital. I know there are other collector's out there who still want things to hold in their hand. I try to give my physical releases something unique. For digital, I just let my music speak for itself and try my best to push it and share the word.

7.We've all seen a terrible live band that is awesome on CD. Is that cool with you or do you lose respect for bands that cannot pull it off live?

I prefer the bands that sound different live. If they sound just like the CD I get bored.

8.Tell us your “core” are you Metal , Rock , Punk , Pop etc because people just have to categorize these days you know?

Yes. Haha. I have influences from all. I guess my main biggest influences are a mix of Punk and Country. The local press took to calling what I do “Red Dirt Macabre”.

9.This is a tough question but a very real reality, Is your band actually talented or just popular?
Many bands make it with a cliche or publicity stunts etc. Would you accept fame even if it was just because of being the “ in” thing or is it actually important to you that you gain favor with talent?

I believe I have talent and write good songs. Although, I do see that how good your songs are does not always decide whether your band is popular or not. I would accept  fame however it comes and work with it. You can try to stear your own path, but can't always choose what is thrown at you. I've learned to make do with what comes my way and will continue to do so.

10.Tell us what to expect from you live. Nothing is more boring than watching bands stare at the floor and bob their heads to music nobody but the band knows. What can your band offer in a live setting that people will remember?

I just try to offer something real. Whether I'm playing something deep or just some of my “fun” songs I put myself into it. As I often play solo, I don't always have someone to play off of. So, I make it real. I put myself into what I'm performing. I think that goes a long way. I won't always win over the whole crowd, but I always win over someone in the crowd.

11. What releases have you put out , When will we see something new?

I've had a ton of releases in the past. I keep in print my 'Crossroads' EP from 2010 and my'MMXIII' EP from 2013 as well as my new single 'Pray to the Saw' that was just released. I have a Nine Inch Nails cover I recorded a few years back that may be my next release. I plan on putting it out as digital and a limited lathe cut. Probably sometime next year as I am still focusing on 'Pray to the Saw' at the moment.

12. If you have videos where can we see them?

 My videos are on YouTube.

13.Everybody has Bandcamp , ReverbNation , Soundcloud , etc
Why do you think this is so important? Doesn't it seem like everyone is giving everything out for free?

There is an overflow here. I feel like I'm drowning in music and it's hard to find what I want because there is so much to go through, but I still feel it's important to have music at these places because that may be how someone finds it. I haven't quite figured out how to stand out in the digital world, especially when there is so much.

14.Best moment of your career so far?

For me, it was the film 'Son of the Saw'. All I ever really wanted to do was cameo in horror films and write songs for the soundtracks. So here I got to be the titular star and the song I wrote played over the closing credits. It's the best recording I've done to date. The film looks great. I've been very happy with it.
